  1. Evangelical Protestant Christian movement
  2. which was founded by John Wesley 1739 within
  3. the Church of England, but which became a
  4. separate body 1795. The church government is
  5. presbyterian in Britain and episcopal in the
  6. USA. In 1988 there were over 50 million
  7. Methodists. Methodist doctrines are contained
  8. in Wesley's sermons and Notes on the New
  9. Testament. A series of doctrinal divisions in
  10. the early 19th century were reconciled by a
  11. conference in London 1932 which brought
  12. Wesleyan methodists, primitive methodists,
  13. and United methodists into the Methodist
  14. Church. Supreme authority is vested in the
  15. annual conference (50% ministers, 50% lay
  16. people; members are grouped under `class
  17. leaders' and churches into `circuits'.
  18. Expansion in the 19th century in developing
  19. industrial areas enabled people to overcome
  20. economic depression or change by spiritual
  21. means. Its encouragement of thrift and simple
  22. living helped many to raise their economic
  23. status. Smaller Methodist groups such as the
  24. Primitive Methodists and the Methodist New
  25. Connexion provided leadership in early trades
  26. unionism in disproportion to their size.
  27. Mainstream Wesleyans at first were
  28. conservative but identified increasingly with
  29. Gladstonian liberalism in the second half of
  30. the 19th century.
